DJ Thuso Motaung of Lesedi FM in R32-million fraud scandal

Self appointed morals and ethics radio dictator of the airwaves DJ Thuso Motaung of Lesedi FM has been accused of defrauding the SABC of more than R32-million. Also embroiled in this December delux-scandal is his wife Mmamontha Motaung, who is also a Lesedi DJ and their business partner Joshua Ramme

Motaung's hugely successful show, Makhulong a Matala (Along Green Pastures), is wildly popular on Lesedi FM, attracting 2.3 million listeners on Sundays between 9am and noon. It is in that very show Mr Motaung emphasises the virtues of honesty and integrity to his audience. Motaung also co-hosts the SABC TV music show Ezodumo with Bhodloza Nzimande.

The trio were arrested on Thursday after they had handed themselves in at Johannesburg Central police station.

They are charged, together with six of their companies, on 17 counts: including eight of fraud, one of money-laundering and another eight of corruption. The state alleges that in an intricate network of business transactions, Motaung, Mmamontha and Ramme, through their companies, entered into a number of agreements with the SABC's Radio Airtime Sales to market their products like Powermix porridge, while Motaung was on air.

The state says the alleged crimes were committed between December 2003 and August this year.

During yesterday's court appearance, the couple, who own properties valued at R1,9-million in Bloemfontein, were given bail of R550 000 each, while Ramme was granted R350 000 bail.

They will appear again in court on January 24.
